If you’re like me and you’re not a hockey fan, one team has given many a team to root for in the NHL playoffs and beyond.
The NY Rangers, in association with the Garden of Dreams Foundation, has awarded a law school scholarship to a survivor of the Sandy Hook school shooting.
Eighteen year old Isaiah Marquez-Greene was an eight year old student at the Connecticut school on that tragic day in 2012.
He survived the shooting and is a high school hockey player.
His six year old sister Ana wasn’t as fortunate.
The Marquez-Greene family started the Ana Grace Project to provide a wide range of student support services.
Isaiah was invited to a Rangers home game under the guise of receiving a jersey from his favorite player, Jacob Trouba.
Trouba not only presented Isaiah with a signed jersey but surprised him with a scholarship to the University of Connecticut Special Program in Law. This program provides students with support for future law students. Trouba also gave Isaiah his phone number and expressed his desire to track his college and law school progress.
In an age when some hockey teams have shown regressive tendencies, the Rangers are a positive sign that the NHL won’t always rival NASCAR as the sport of the Flat Earth Society.
Kudos to Isaiah.
Kudos to Jacob Trouba.
Kudos to the NY Rangers.
Hopefully, more kudos to come for the NHL.
